Transforming Lives in Colombia: Yaneth’s Journey with Co-Inspira

Social leader and Human Rights defender Yaneth Perez is a delegate of the Territorial Council of Peace and Reconciliation, the Advisory Council of Women, and the Federation of Victims of Cauca and a facilitator accompanying systemic action research circles within the Co-Inspira program in the Cauca department, Colombia. In this interview, Yaneth shares her experiences and insights into the Co-Inspira project, shedding light on its unique approach to fostering lasting transformation.
Celebrating first Successes
In my role as the facilitator of the research circles, I am proud to witness the unique accomplishments of each group. One remarkable success comes from the circle of knowledge and empowerment (CEFOT), dedicated to strengthening territorial organizations and communities. CEFOT collaborates with diverse populations in the north of Cauca, including Afro community councils (ACON), the Association formed by indigenous communities (ACIN), and LGTBI populations known as Colibríes. We have worked with the ACIN and ACON several times, and it has been a magnificent experience because the circle has successfully brought these groups together, fostering cooperation and unity. In the Afro and indigenous communities, LGBTI is still a taboo and until now it had been impossible to bring them together with the Colibríes.
Matria
For 2024, all circles meticulously refine their action plans and establish distinctive branding for each. This branding not only provides a recognizable identity but also signifies the circles’ commitment to their respective missions. The women’s circle, for instance, has completed this process and named themselves Matria, symbolizing unity among women from various regions and ethnic backgrounds, including indigenous women, peasant women, and victims of the armed conflict. I find immense excitement in witnessing the circle evolve with a clear name, logo, and a profound sense of identity. Matria engages in training on gender issues and aims to pass on their knowledge to the younger generation. Each member of the circle has selected a young woman to join meetings and receive training on methodologies and leadership.
Facing Challenges with Adaptivity
As we face challenges, Co-Inspira remains committed to adaptability and reflection. The environmental circle, situated in Santa Rosa and Mercaderes, operates in remote municipalities with limited internet and phone connectivity. Similarly, the entrepreneurship circle encounters obstacles related to security and connectivity. Acknowledging the need for adaptation, we have shifted from a departmental approach to creating local circles, tailoring our theory of change to diverse local contexts. I believe that the project’s success lies in its adaptability and the willingness to learn from mistakes. Errors guide us toward better solutions. Co-Inspira is about continuous improvement.
Co-Inspira: A Unique Peacebuilding Endeavor
In my perspective, Co-Inspira stands out from traditional peacebuilding projects due to its transformative approach. The project seeks to bring diverse communities together and instigate genuine change. What sets Co-Inspira apart is that my colleagues and I serve as facilitators and companions, recognizing that the true protagonists of this journey are the people themselves, not the organization. For me, Co-Inspira is a personal mission, given my history as a victim of the conflict. I have suffered significant losses, and this project provides me with the opportunity to contribute to peacebuilding. To be able to transform, to build peace, to be with the community, and to learn is the most wonderful thing. Co-Inspira has a profound impact on both individuals and the community at large.
In the capable hand of individuals like Yaneth, Co-Inspira continues the path towards lasting transformation and peace in Colombia, one step at a time.

Yaneth Pérez, líder social y defensora de los Derechos Humanos, es delegada del Consejo Territorial de Paz y Reconciliación, el Consejo Asesor de Mujeres y la Federación de Víctimas del Cauca, además de ser facilitadora que acompaña círculos de investigación de acción sistémica dentro del programa Co-Inspira en el departamento de Cauca, Colombia. En esta entrevista, Yaneth comparte sus experiencias y perspectivas sobre el proyecto Co-Inspira, arrojando luz sobre su enfoque único para formentar una transformación duradera.

En mi papel como facilitadora de los círculos de investigación, me enorgullece presenciar los logros únicos de cada grupo. Un éxito notable proviene del círculo de conocimiento y empoderamiento (CEFOT), dedicado a fortalecer las organizaciones y comunidades territoriales. CEFOT colabora con diversas poblaciones en el norte del Cauca, incluyendo los consejos comunitarios afro (ACON), la Asociación formada por comunidades indígenas (ACIN) y las poblaciones LGTBI conocidas como Colibríes. Hemos trabajado con ACIN y ACON varias veces, y ha sido una experiencia magnífica porque el círculo ha logrado reunir a estos grupos, fomentando cooperación y la unidad. En las comunidades afro e indígenas, la LGTBI aún es un tabú y hasta agora había sido imposible reunirlos con los Colibríes.

Para el 2024, todos los círculos perfeccionan meticulosamente sus planes de acción y establecen una identidad distintiva para cada uno. Esta identidad no solo proporciona un reconocimiento visual, sino que también significa el compromiso de los círculos con sus respectivas misiones. El círculo de mujeres, por ejemplo, ha completado este proceso y se ha autodenominado Matria, simbolizando la unidad entre mujeres de diversas regiones y antecedentes étnicos, incluyendo mujeres indígenas, campesinas y víctimas del conflicto armado. Me llena de emoción presenciar cómo el círculo evoluciona con un nombre claro, un logotipo y un profundo sentido de identidad. Matria se dedica a la formación en cuestiones de género y tiene como objetivo transmitir sus conocimientos a la generación más joven. Cada miembro del círculo ha seleccionado a una joven para unirse a las reuniones y recibir formación sobre metodologías y liderazgo.
Enfrentando Desafíos con Adaptibilidad
Al enfrentar desafíos, Co-Inspira mantiene su compromiso con la adaptabilidad y la reflexión. El círculo ambiental, ubicado en Santa Rosa y Mercaderes, opera en municipios remotos con una conectividad limitada a internet y teléfono. De manera similar, el círculo de emprendimiento enfrenta obstáculos relacionados con la seguridad y la conectividad. Reconociendo la necesidad de adaptación, hemos pasado de un enfoque departamental a la creación de círculos locales, ajustando nuestra teoría del cambio a diversos contextos locales. Creo que el éxito del proyecto radica en su adaptabilidad y la disposición para aprender de los errores. Los errores nos guían hacia soluciones mejores. Co-Inspira se trata de mejora continua.
Co-Inspira: Un Esfuerzo Único para la Construcción de la Paz
Desde mi perspectiva, Co-Inspira destaca de los proyectos tradicionales de construcción de paz debido a su enfoque transformador. El proyecto busca unir a comunidades diversas e instigar un cambio genuino. Lo que distingue a Co-Inspira es que mis colegas y yo actuamos como facilitadores y acompañantes, reconociendo que los verdaderos protagonistas de este viaje son las personas mismas, no la organización. Para mí, Co-Inspira es una misión personal, dada mi historia como víctima del conflicto. He sufrido pérdidas significativas, y este proyecto me brinda la oportunidad de contribuir a la construcción de la paz. Poder transformar, construir paz, estar con la comunidad y aprender es lo más maravilloso. Co-Inspira tiene un impacto profundo tanto en individuos como en la comunidad en general.
En las hábiles manos de individuos como Yaneth, Co-Inspira continúa el camino hacia una transformación duradera y la paz en Colombia, paso a paso.
